| Overview Foot Conditions |
|
Common
Complaints |
Bunions |
A bunion is an enlargement
of the bone and soft tissue on the inside of the foot, just
behind the big toe. Bunions can be both painjul and inconvenient
and finding a comfortable fitting shoe is difficult. |
| |
Hammer Toes are caused
by toes that curl under themselves, caused by a buckling of
the joints. The buckling of the toe causes the toe to rise
up and rub against the top of a shoe, causing painful corns. |
Toenail
Problems |
Ingrown and fungal nails, thickened
and discolored, nails are two of the most common nail complaints.
Ingrown nails are caused by aggressive trimming, trauma, or
bacterial infection. Fungal nails are a condition of the nail
matrix or root caused by a fungal infection |
Heel
Pain |
Pain in the bottom of
the heel after standing in the morning, is usually associated
with plantar fasciitis. There may be a heel spur coupled with
the fasciitis. The pain is sporatic and typically returns
after rest or general inactivity. |

Common
Complaints |
Neuroma |
A neuroma is an enlargement
and thickening of the nerve of the bottom of the foot, near
the ball of the foot. It can exhibit signs of cramping of
the toes, sharp pain, numbness and/or burning sensations in
the foot or toes. |
Functional Orthotics
|
The foot's function
is twofold: locomotion and shock-absorption for the body.
The arch is capable of absorbing repetitive jolts and protecting
the larger joints of the body, e.g., ankle, knee, hip, and
even the back from wearing out. Rigid arch supports, orthotics,
can reduce or eliminate heel pain, corns, calluses, knee,
hip, and even back pain. |
Calluses |
A callus is a thickened
area of skin on the ball of the foot caused by a misalignment
at the Ametatarsal parabola@, (the bones comprising the ball
of the foot). They may also be assiociated with hammertoes. |
Diabetes |
Diabetes is a chronic
disease of the blood in which the blood sugar is elvated.
It can contribute to foot problems in two major ways: 1) Causes
decreased circulation, and 2) Causes decrease feeling to the
feet, so that infections and injuries may go unnoticed and
the body can not fight infection sufficiently to heal wounds. |
Warts
and
Lesions |
A wart is caused by
a viral infection. If left untreated, they can spread to new
areas and become more invasive. These lesions can also mimic
other more serious skin diseases, e.g., carcinomas or melanomas. |
Children |
Proper care and treatment
of the feet, beginning in childhood, will prevent many of
the mechanical and orthopedic problems seen in adults. In-toeing,
out-toeing, hammertoes, and heel pain are a few of the ailments
that can be corrected early in life to avoid future foot problems. |
Ankle Pain |
Ankle pain can be caused by a
variety of factors, including arthritis, sprains, misalignment
of the foot, synovitis or injuries. They may also be assiociated
with systemic diseases, e.g., cardiac problems, diabetes,
and hypertension. Due to new instrumentation and advancements,
ankle arthroscopy is a valuble tool in diagnosing and treating
many ankle problems. |
